In the course of the takeover of About You, Zalando has secured more than 90% of About You’s share capital. Irrespective of the takeover, Zalando has ambitious plans: in 2025, sales are expected to increase by between 4 and 9 percent – twice as much as in 2024. Incidentally, Switzerland is Zalando’s second strongest market after Germany.
The time has come: TikTok Shop has opened its seller portal for merchants in Germany. At the same time, TikTok is working on expanding Fulfilment by TikTok to Germany. In France and Italy, too, merchant registration is now possible.
If you want to sell via marketplaces in the Netherlands and Belgium, there is no getting around the top dog, bol. But Amazon also wants a piece of the action and is trying to expand its position. Regardless of the uncertain future in the US, TikTok is apparently continuing to expand TikTok Shop. According to reports, TikTok Shop is set to launch in Italy in March or April, with Germany, France, Brazil and Japan to follow later in the year. Meanwhile, Lidl has launched initial sales attempts on TikTok Shop in the UK.
Amazon is experimenting with re-directing search queries to brands’ webshops outside of its own app. In the U.S., some Amazon customers have been presented with options to visit external online shops if they searched for products which Amazon itself doesn’t sell. The beta test seems to be directly connected to Amazon’s “Buy with Prime” initiative through which brands can integrate Prime shipping options and payment through Amazon directly into their own webshop.
A good year for Amazon: Amazon has generated an operating income of 68.6 billion US.Dollar after 36.9 billion US-Dollar in the previous year. Net income almost doubled to 59.2 billion US dollars, with Amazon posting a net income of 20 billion US dollars in the fourth quarter alone.
Amazon.de is entering the optical business and is now also selling prescription glasses. With “Amazon optics”, Amazon is attacking established players such as Mister Spex – however, many additional services such as virtual try-on are missing.
Marketplaces are driving sales growth in German e-commerce: After two years of declining sales, online retailing is expected to grow by 1.1 percent in 2024, according to the bevh. This growth stems from marketplaces, which grew by 4.7 percent, while online pure players continued to suffer a decline of 3.6 percent and omnichannel retailers a decline of 2.0 percent. For this year, the bevh expects an increase of 2.5 percent
